A research report on climate change in Canada — told through the landscapes, industries, and people most at stake.
Overview
Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity according to the World Health Organization — and its impact on Canadian workplaces is significant. Extreme heat events alone could result in 128 million work hours lost annually in Canada by 2100, at a cost of nearly $15 billion. Sun Life partnered with Environics Research to survey Canadian employees and employers on the health and economic effects of climate change, and I designed the report that brought those findings to life.
The visual direction was intentional from the start. Rather than relying on familiar Canadian imagery, we sought out landscapes and cities that are rarely represented — downtown Saskatoon, Yellowknife, the ice forming under Confederation Bridge in PEI. We also made a deliberate effort to show the breadth of industries affected: fishing, farming, forestry, oil, and service workers alike. Natural disasters in Alberta and the visible effects of a changing climate grounded the report in reality without feeling alarmist. The result is a piece that feels distinctly and honestly Canadian.
The report was designed within Sun Life's brand standards and built as an accessible PDF with AODA compliance, a functional navigation bar, and interactive buttons — making it easy to navigate and inclusive for all readers.
